Single, 2" diameter, bare root bulb- dormant winter grower. Picture is not the exact plant for sale, but typical of the plants being offered.
A beautiful, winter growing bulb from South Africa and Namibia, producing frosty grey, ruffled leaves in the fall, followed by bright pink flower spike. Very attractive, rarer relative of the more common Velthiemia bracteata. Likes well drained sandy soil. Can tolerate temps to 25F. Recommended for mediterranean climates, such as in coastal California gardens. Easily grown in pots as well.
NOTE: Winter Growing plants evolved in geographic regions with very specific climate conditions; cool wet winters and hot dry summers, synonymous with "Mediterranean Climate Plants." Their growing habits are opposite to common horticultural practices for most of North America. Winter Growers often require a dry dormant period in the heat of summer to thrive and bloom the following fall season. A very light mist of water during dormancy can be beneficial, but a wet or soggy pot while dormant is almost certainly a death sentence.
